A „Hidden Champion“ turns 25

‘A hinge that reliably supports and moves doors, yet operates completely out of sight? Twenty-five years ago, that was an absolute novelty,’ says Albert Bartels. In 2001, BaSys became the first German manufacturer to introduce a concealed hinge for flush-fitting doors, thereby pioneering an architectural approach that remains relevant to this day. The “hidden champion” has evolved into a comprehensive range that meets the market’s diverse functional and aesthetic requirements.

We named our invention “Pivota” 25 years ago; it means “to turn”. The hinge for turning doors is concealed, and when the door is closed, the mechanism remains invisible. At BAU 2001 in Munich, we had the opportunity to present this new development to an international audience for the first time. Many customers recognised the potential and realised the vision of a door reduced to the essentials as a purist, minimalist design and architectural element.

Variable in terms of weight, function and finish

In response to ever-increasing demands on function and aesthetics, we have expanded our range of concealed hinge technology for flush-fitting doors to form the “Pivota DX” product family. We can now cover load capacities from 40 to 350 kg per pair and realise the entire spectrum, from simple residential doors to highly complex architectural doors. This also includes hinges for doors that open inwards into the reveal. A characteristic feature of all BaSys hinges is the use of hybrid materials, which allow load-bearing capacity to be finely scaled within milling-compatible groups. 16 standard colours, together with project-specific finishes, offer a wide range of design options.

Minimalist lines

In addition, hinge solutions are available for frames and door leaves that are flush with the wall, allowing doors to influence the feel of a room both visually and functionally. Thanks to the hinges, the door leaf lies flush with either the frame or with both the frame and the wall. Frameless frames allow the wall design to be continued in such a way that doors are only recognisable by their minimalist lines.

Concealed hardware for all doors

In 2007, we launched our first concealed system for rebated doors, which led to the development of the “Pivota FX” series. This was followed in 2011 by a hinge for standard rebated doors, the technology of which we have adapted for front and apartment entrance doors with an 18 mm overlap and a leaf seal. Since then, a concealed system has also been available for external doors exposed to the weather.
